The Problem with Threads

Professor Edward Lee of U. C. Berkeley warns against the use of the popular ‘threads’ programming model for emerging multicore and multiprocessor architectures. In his article The Problem with Threads in the May 2006 issue of IEEE Computer he explores the problem of non-determinism in threads and recommends some alternatives. Highly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in software for emerging parallel architectures.

Tampere SoC Conference

The long-running International Symposium on System-on-Chip has put up its 2006 web site and call for papers. The conference is held every year in Tampere, Finland. This year the dates are November 14-16, 2006.

IEEE PDPS Special Issue on CMP Architectures

IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems has announced a Special Issue on CMP Architectures to be published in their August 2007 issue. The deadline for submission is September 1, 2006.
